Deciding which colors you plan to incorporate into your wedding or event is one of the most fun (and often most difficult) choices you have to make. Choosing a color scheme for your wedding or event is important because colors help to set the tone, as well as guide your design, décor and floral choices. Going with champagne and ivory? Chances are your event will feel more formal and sophisticated. Going with fushia and orange? The vibe is likely to more fun and light-hearted.

I think it’s important to choose your colors early on, so that you can incorporate them into your save-the-dates or invitations. This gives guests a sneak peek into your color scheme and sets the mood for the event. It helps the entire event, from start to finish, feel coordinated and pulled together.

For example, I recently planned a surprise 60th birthday party at a private home. The invitation incorporated fushia, orange and white, so I carried these colors through in the décor and florals for the party. Paper lanters in fushia, orange and white hung as decorations, while centerpieces on the tables consisted of alternating bouquets of fushia and orange Gerbera Daisies. Fushia and white feather boas were handed out for the female guests to wear, lending an element of whimsy and fun to the party.

Here is another example of a color inspiration that began with the invitations in a wedding I planned. The couple chose silver, black and fushia for their wedding colors. The invitations were black, white and silver with fushia accents. We carried the color scheme through to the bridesmaids dresses, flowers, escort cards, programs, linens and centerpieces.

And another example of an invitation as a color inspiration. This one was for a rehearsal lunch I planned – we took the inspiration from the invitation which was a postcard of the location. We incorporated the yellow, green and white from the photo postcard into the table settings.

So when you’re thinking about colors for your next wedding or event, consider incorporating them into your invitation – as you can see, it goes a long way towards establishing a cohesive feel for the event!
