There’s something magical about seeing a school transformed with color, creativity, and community spirit. Our school’s Art Festival was one of those events that made kids’ faces light up the moment they walked through the door. With a little planning (and a lot of balloons!), we turned the school hallways, cafeteria and gym into a full-on celebration of art.

If you’re planning an art show, school carnival, or community event, here’s a peek at how we made it happen — and some fun ideas you can borrow for your own.

🌈 A Grand Entrance That Wows

We wanted families to feel the festival vibe right away, so the front hallway got the full treatment:

  • Rainbow Balloon Archway & Ceiling Garland – Using linky balloons (the kind designed to tie end-to-end), we strung a rainbow garland across the hallway ceiling for a tunnel-like effect. Balloon towers anchored each end with pops of color and polka dots.

  • Giant Crayon Box Prop – An oversized cardboard crayon box, complete with larger-than-life crayons, set the theme from the very first step inside.

  • Paint Pour Buckets – Plastic buckets with tulle “spilling out” of them looked like paint was flowing right over the doorway. Such a fun, inexpensive detail that made kids point and smile as they walked by.

  • Bright balloon clusters added bursts of color around every corner, tying the whole event together.

📸 The Photo Spot Everyone Loved

Every festival needs a spot where families can stop for photos, and ours was a hit. We set up:

  • Rainbow Curtain Backdrop with a colorful “GLE Art Festival” banner strung across.

    ree
  • Oversized Props made from pool noodles — crayons, pencils, and giant paintbrushes. We also added big paint tubes, a glue stick, and balloon clusters that looked like paint splatters.

  • Paint Palette & Rug – A giant paint palette leaned against the backdrop, with a polka-dot rug and chairs in front for the perfect posing spot.

Kids loved it, parents snapped tons of pictures, and the setup itself doubled as décor for the event.

🪧 Directional Signs

To guide guests around the festival, we made simple rainbow paint-splash signs for each area — Music, Artwork, Raffle Baskets, Crafts, Food, and Photos. They were attached to wooden dowels and tucked into balloon bases to blend right in with the rest of the décor.

They looked cute, matched the theme perfectly, and actually helped people know where to go — always a win.

🎶 Music & Stage Décor

In the gym, we wanted the stage to feel just as festive as the halls. We added:

  • A bold GLE sign with red, yellow, and blue balloon splashes spilling out.

    ree
  • Paper Rosette Fans decorated with little paint palettes, crayons, and brushes across the stage front.

  • There was even live music from local performers, which filled the space with energy while families browsed the art.

🖼 The Gallery

The real stars of the festival? The student artwork. The gym walls were lined with creative masterpieces, turning the school into a colorful gallery. From painted canvases to drawings and mixed media projects, kids were so proud to show off their work.

Our school’s art teacher does an incredible job displaying all of the students’ artwork and transforming the gym into a true gallery. She carefully arranges every piece so it looks amazing while making sure each student’s work is highlighted. It’s definitely the heart of the entire festival!

🎟 Raffle Baskets & Family Fun

Alongside the art displays, families could enter raffles for themed baskets — a favorite fundraiser add-on. Tables covered in bright red tablecloths tied everything together with the stage and entrance displays.

Parents loved browsing, kids loved picking their favorite baskets, and the raffle helped raise money to keep future events going strong.

✨ Why It Worked

This event was more than just decorations — it was about atmosphere. The balloons, props, and photo spots made it fun, but the heart of it all was the student artwork and the way the whole school community came together.

If you’re planning a school art night, remember:

  • Use big, bold décor pieces (giant crayons, balloon arches) to set the tone.

  • Add an interactive element like a photo booth so families leave with memories.

  • Celebrate the students by making their art the centerpiece of every hallway.

It doesn’t take a professional decorator to make it happen — just a little creativity, teamwork, and a lot of color!
